Highlights
Description
The hike from Imlil to Tizi n’Tamatert and on to Tachdirt is renowned for its stunning panoramic views of the High Atlas mountains, immersion in the traditional Berber culture, and diverse natural scenery, including terraced fields, and juniper and pine forests. The primary highlight is reaching the Tizi n’Tamatert pass (around 2,280m or 7,480 ft), which offers breathtaking, sweeping views of both the Imlil (Ait Mizane) and Imnane Valleys. On clear days, you can see towering peaks, including Jbel Oukaimeden. The trail passes through several authentic, ancient Berber hamlets like Tamatert, Ouaneskra, and Tachdirt itself, offering a glimpse into the local farming and herding communities’ way of life and unique architectural styles. Tachdirt is one of the highest and most remote villages in the region. The route traverses a variety of landscapes, including lush groves of walnut, cherry, and apple trees in the lower valleys, before ascending through fragrant pine and juniper forests. You’ll also encounter terraced fields and gushing river streams. The hike includes the opportunity to visit a local Berber home for a traditional meal (lunch) on the pass or in a village, allowing for interaction with local families and learning about their customs and history. The hike is generally considered moderate, making it accessible to those with reasonable fitness without requiring technical mountaineering experience. The elevation gain provides a rewarding sense of accomplishment and spectacular views without extreme exertion
